Current Dissertations

The Creative Dimension of the Phenomena of the Alien

PhD student: PhDr. Mgr. Michal Kalnický

The topic of the Alien, as the opposite of one's own, has long been one of the hot topics across the social sciences. However, Bernhard Wadlenfels' responsive phenomenology aims to investigate the Alien at the level of its very essence and views every experience as a response to the Alien, disturbing the boundaries of our order. The Alien comes with a demand for a response that we cannot avoid, and which inevitably affects us on multiple levels. The Alien, a radicalized form of otherness, acts here as a hyperphenomenon, emerging with every... Viac

A Philosophical-Anthropological Reflection on Anthropocene Discourse: The Problem of the Plurality of Statements of the “Human”

PhD student: Mgr. Katarína Podušelová

The dissertation responds from a philosophical-anthropological perspective to the topical issue of the extensive and ongoing change of geological-climatic conditions on planet Earth. These changes are captured by the concept of the Anthropocene, which is defined by the basic idea of the extensive human impact on the functionality of the Earth System as a whole. In addition to the intense interest in anthropogenic influences, the basic idea of the Anthropocene has also produced a variety of perspectives through which the word “human” is... Viac

The Philosophical Concept of Rebellion: Albert Camus and the Spirit of Anarchy

PhD student: Mgr. Dominik Kulcsár

Rebellion is a neglected philosophical concept whose importance today cannot be underestimated. In contemporary society, we are contending with a dangerously misconceived notion of individual freedom, which sees the individual’s sphere of autonomy as unlimited and impervious to outside interference. This leads to all kinds of irrational rebellions, most recently witnessed in the revolt against public health measures during the pandemic. This raises important philosophical questions about the nature of freedom and rebellion, and it is... Viac

The Ideological Influence of the Russian Philosophical and Political Discourse of the 19th Century on the Thinking of Ľudovít Štúr

PhD student: Mgr. Dmytro Tomakh

The topic of the influence of selected Russian intellectuals, specifically the Russian Slavophile circle, on the thinking of Ľudovít Štúr was already addressed in the works of Tibor Pichler and Tatiana Ivantyšynová. However, the authors themselves raised questions regarding the character and intensity of this influence. This dissertation thus builds on the issue of the "reversibility" of Štúr's thinking, which presupposes changes in Štúr's approach to national emancipation and a shift towards the Russian cultural paradigm. In the context of... Viac

How Philosophy Can Help in the Fight against Misinformation

PhD student: MA Dimitar Ganev
This research aims to develop a novel, philosophically grounded approach to the problem of misinformation on social media. Up to now, academics and companies have explored technical solutions such as debunking or suspending misinformation-spreading accounts. Similarly, the current body of research, both in philosophy and in the social sciences, is focused on the features inherent to misinformation itself. This leaves a significant gap in understanding the role of people who tend to engage with false claims. This research aims to address this... Viac

Daubner, P.
Title in English: Ekológia, politika a sloboda
Bratislava, 2024

A collective scientific monograph, edited by Peter Daubner, explores the complex, intricate, and mutually influencing relationship between politics, ecology, and freedom. The authors of the publication analyze the philosophical, social, political, and economic aspects of the global environmental crisis within the conceptual framework of the Anthropocene, placing emphasis on the reflection of the causes and consequences of this crisis, the symptoms of which began to manifest fully during the 20th century. The authors build upon the philosophical legacy of the French thinker André Gorz, whose political ecology in the 20th century systematically criticized an economy based on the imperative of growth, whether in the capitalist or socialist development variant. The authors of the publication are František Novosád, Boris Zala, Richard Sťahel, Ivan Buraj, Peter Daubner, Daniel Costa Jařab, and Greg Evans. The publication was supported by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, its representation in the Slovak Republic.

Title in English: Encounters with Nineteenth-Century Continental Philosophy : discussions and debates
Leiden - Boston, 2024

With figures such as Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Feuerbach, Marx, Engels, and Nietzsche, the nineteenth century was a dynamic time of philosophical development. The period made lasting contributions to several fields of philosophy. Moreover, it paved the way for the development of the social sciences at the turn of the twentieth century. This volume is dedicated to exploring the rich tradition of nineteenth-century Continental philosophy in its different areas with the main purpose of highlighting the importance of this tradition in the development of the leading streams of thought of the twentieth and twenty-first century.

Title in English: A History of Hegelianism in Golden Age Denmark : Tome II: The Martensen Period: 1837–1841
Leiden - Boston, 2024

This is the second volume of a three-volume work dedicated to exploring the influence of G.W.F.Hegel’s philosophical thinking in Golden Age Denmark. The work demonstrates that the largely overlooked tradition of Danish Hegelianism played a profound and indeed constitutive role in many spheres of Golden Age culture. This second tome treats the most intensive period in the history of the Danish Hegel reception, namely, the years from 1837 to 1841. The main figure in this period is the theologian Hans Martensen who made Hegel’s philosophy a sensation among the students at the University of Copenhagen in the late 1830s. This period also includes the publication of Johan Ludvig Heiberg’s Hegelian journal, Perseus, and Frederik Christian Sibbern’s monumental review of it, which represented the most extensive treatment of Hegel’s philosophy in the Danish language at the time. During this period Hegel’s philosophy flourished in unlikely genres such as drama and lyric poetry. During these years Hegelianism enjoyed an unprecedented success in Denmark until it gradually began to be perceived as a dangerous trend.

Title in English: A History of Hegelianism in Golden Age Denmark : Tome I: The Heiberg Period: 1824–1836
Leiden - Boston, 2024

This is the first of a three-volume work dedicated to exploring the influence of G.W.F. Hegel’s philosophical thinking in Golden Age Denmark. The work demonstrates that the largely overlooked tradition of Danish Hegelianism played a profound and indeed constitutive role in many spheres of Golden Age culture. This initial tome covers the period from the beginning of the Hegel reception in the Danish Kingdom in the 1820s until the end of 1836. The dominant figure from this period is the poet and critic Johan Ludvig Heiberg, who attended Hegel’s lectures in Berlin in 1824 and then launched a campaign to popularize Hegel’s philosophy among his fellow countrymen. Using his journal Kjøbenhavns flyvende Post as a platform, Heiberg published numerous articles containing ideas that he had borrowed from Hegel. Several readers felt provoked by Heiberg’s Hegelianism and wrote critical responses to him, many of which appeared in Kjøbenhavnsposten, the rival of Heiberg’s journal. Through these debates Hegel’s philosophy became an important part of Danish cultural life.

Title in English: The Ungraspable as a Philosophical Problem
Leiden, 2024

The Ungraspable as a Philosophical Problem provides an analysis of the ungraspable—of that which cannot be grasped by the mind or the senses. When referring to the ungraspable in sensible reality, we often speak of the “untouchable,” the “invisible,” the “inaudible,” and the “untastable.” In the abstract realm, we speak of the “non-conceptual,” the “ineffable,” the “unsayable.” These are the modalities of the ungraspable that are explored in this study. They have been considered absolute by some thinkers, a claim that is critically assessed. The central claim is that the absoluteness of these modalities is linked to a desire to grasp, which is characterized by the desire for exactitude, for the proper, and for domination. The book examines the otherness of so-called inorganic or more-than-living objects (natural objects and artifacts), demonstrating its importance to our current situation.

Title in English: Transparent Logics. Smalll Differences with Huge Consequences
Leiden, 2024

The book presents Transparent Intensional Logic in several of its latest realisations in such a way that it makes a case for the system and demonstrates how the theory can be applied to a wide range of cases. The work strikes a good balance between the philosophical-conceptual and the logical-formal. Transparent Logics prioritises depth over breadth and focuses on advanced formal semantics and philosophical logic, going beyond a mere introduction to the subject, but delving into the details instead.
Kuchtová, A., Jabre, E., Hidalgo, A.Orozco,
Paris, 2024
